On Saturday, a loyal pair of friends accompanied me to a vast shopping center in upstate New York, which has nearly 250 stores. Not only was the experience a lot to digest, but completing my first shopping consumption endeavor-- after not shopping for a year-- made me a little uneasy.

I felt so much pressure to make the right choices when shopping and labored over my decisions. After all was said an done, and after nearly 9 hours of perusing, I walked out with three pairs of flats, one pair of pumps, one t-shirt, two belts, three skirts, and a dress. Fortunately for me and my pocketbook, I didn't spend nearly as much as one might think on those goodies.

Will have photos coming in the next little while....

A Let Down

So, it can be said that I have gone a year and a day without shopping.

I had every intention of purchasing something online yesterday or running to Barney's and buying something terrific, but it never happened. I don't know what levels of liberation I will feel in being able to shop for fashion items again. Part of me wants to attack every sample sale in town and the other part of me doesn't want to do anything in commemoration of this achievement.

In the cab ride home this evening, I was thinking that I would wake up at 12:01 a.m. this coming morning to make my first purchase right away and usher in a new shopping code of conduct. But I can't decide if I really feel the need to shop that badly.

It's been a year and I still don't need anything. In fact, about 75% of my wardrobe is in storage right now and I don't miss any of it. Not to mention, there are things in the other 25% of my closet that I have only worn once.

What does this craving to shop say about our culture? It's a habit and not a good one. I will let you know how I fare tomorrow.

8 Days to Go!

Not that I am counting or anything.... But it has been almost an entire year and I have not purchased one fashion item. It feels like a great accomplishment, and although my blogging has dwindled over the past few months, I have been keeping true to my promise.

I have been really thinking about the lessons I have learned since embarking on this adventure and, for the most part, the experience has been terrific.

But back to those lessons:

1. Sales Come and Go.
When I was shopping previously, I would come head-to-head with a sale, see something that seemed like a great deal, and then rationalize the purchase by saying, "Well, I will never find this product at this price, ever again. Not true. Most stores, designers or not, have sales at least twice a year. And while the product might not be identical, it's usually very likely that you will find something just as great at another time. Don't get sucked into the sale mentality of "I have to get this now, or I may be missing out on a great deal."

2. Don't Impulse Buy.
Be patient when shopping. If you are unsure as to whether you really like a piece, don't purchase it. Ask the sales associate to put the item(s) on hold and go home or elsewhere. If you can't get the product out of your head, go back to the store and buy it. Don't buy something if you aren't 100% sure you can "own" the piece.

3. Think Long-Term.
Most fashion magazines will hate that I am saying this, but don't feel inclined to change your wardrobe to meet the current fads. Fads are fads because they don't last forever. Style is classic, enduring, smart. Find your personal style and stick to it. When shopping, ask, "Would I wear this in five years? Or is it something that is only appealing for this season?" Go with the piece that you will still love putting on in the morning five years from now.

4. Remember: Quality, not Quantity.
American women tend to think, "Okay, I have X amount of cash, so that means I need to get as many articles of clothing possible with my limited funds." On the other hand, most European women think, "Okay, I have X amount of cash, so that means I need to find one, good quality item that is perfect for me." Blowing your fashion budget on clothing that will literally fall apart at the seams in 3 months is not worth your money or time. Spend your energies on a piece that is gorgeous, durable, and works just as hard as you do.

5. Live Simply.
You don't need to fill your closet to the point of combustion. Over-consumption is a major issue in the United States and Americans need to start, not only living within their means, but also start learning when to say, "Enough is enough." Having too many possessions is not a status symbol, it's only indicative of someone who cannot practice self-restraint.

Three Post-Fast Visits I Intend to Make

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 86px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zuauSW0qQuY/ShMcFamv7GI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/EAH8FgkrSp4/s320/image150.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337640862730939490" />

Doyle & Doyle
Specializing in vintage jewelry, I first heard about this gem from a co-worker in my office's fashion closet. A pair of sisters created this chic and classic vault that sells all types of pieces, many now one-of-a-kind, from necklaces to earrings to rings. A majority of the items for sale were with picked up at an estate sale or other type of antique sale and Doyle & Doyle allows you to reap the benefits of their scouring.
What I am Drooling Over: Citrine and Gold Studs or Garnet and Gold Studs
Located at:
189 Orchard Street
New York, NY
doyleanddoyle.com
212-677-9991

Eryn brinié
This South Korea-based design firm consistently produces one feminine article of clothing after another. Every piece is simple and classic, yet modern and fancy, with ruffles, lace, and quality fabrics. Somewhat like the Gap of Korea, Eryn brinié is going to transform American shopping, with its low price point and exceptional design.
What I am Drooling Over: The Long Ruffle Cardigan
Located at:
501 Broadway
New York, NY
erynbrinie.com
212-308-6134

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 262px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zuauSW0qQuY/ShQCvIk1i3I/AAAAAAAAAHY/AU64qEIlRPs/s320/Madewell22.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337894467119975282" />
Madewell
Madewell is another brand created and run by a team of designers, similar to Eryn brinié. With denim, cardigans, and t-shirts, they focus their lines on casual, comfortable items that can be worn until you've worn 'em out. Basically, the pieces alone will never go out of style, so each is a wise investment.
What I am Drooling Over: Any one of their scarves
Located at:
486 Broadway
New York, NY
madewell1937.com
212-226-6954

Could I Have Single-Handedly Prevented the Recession?

The Fashion Fast began as an attempt to do some good--reduce waste, consume less, give back to a charity, and enhance my personal will-power. But now I am beginning to feel bad about my non-shopping habits. Due to the recession, retailers are having a difficult time meeting their sales quotas and saying afloat financially (who isn't right now?), and most are blaming these trials on the fact that the money Americans once spent on shopping has now been tucked into mattresses.

A few Fashion Fast followers have questioned me on this paradox, "Don't you feel bad about not shopping? Don't you feel bad about not injecting funds into a hurting economy?" The answer is no, I don't feel one once of remorse. (And, it's been nearly 10 months!)

First of all, I began the fast before the mass downfall of the economy. Yes, America was already experiencing a recession, but the financial sector collapse didn't happen until a few months after I engaged in my anti-shopping habits. Second, there is no way that I would have bought enough clothing to help curtail the deficits that retailers are seeing on their balance sheets. I used to buy a lot, but not that much. Third, given the economic climate on my own micro level, my funds for shopping would likely have been limited anyway, just like everyone else.

When I think about the empty storefronts and the folding of multiple retail chains, I can't feel bad. The fashion world has been so bloated with retailers trying to sell the next person the same thing as the person before, that it's probably a healthy thing to trim the retail fat.

I want to know though, how have your shopping habits changed over the past year?

My First Post-Fast Purchase

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: undefinedpx; height: undefinedpx;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zuauSW0qQuY/SeM-P4Am16I/AAAAAAAAAHI/UZ4vyk6fL6g/s320/33451_in_xl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324167626935949218" />
The finish date for doing The Fashion Fast is quickly coming up, so it's only natural that I would be thinking about what my first post-fast expenditure might be. After a year of no fashion or clothing purchases, it will be really strange to start buying for myself again. I don't know how it's going to feel to enter a store, browse, try things on, and check out after not doing so for so long. Sometimes I think that I could go without shopping for longer than a year.... (Someone dare me.)

But after realizing the limited nature of my shoe selection, I have determined that shoes are the items that I miss purchasing most. Not because I have any sort of fetish, but because a pair of uncomfortable shoes can ruin a gal's day. There have been some moments during the fast where I would give anything to run to the closest boutique and pick out a new pair of cute flats, for this simple and sole (!) reason: my feet are killing me.

So, to celebrate the closing of my fast in just a few short months, I intend to purchase a pair of nude, super-comfy, but entirely chic, pumps. Believe it or not, there are designers out there that make a comfortable heel, and I intend to find them!

Of course, this will all happen after my July 15 anniversary date.

8 Down, 4 To Go

It's a few days past, but I have officially met the 8-month mark.

Either time is flying by or I have really gotten this no-shopping mentality down. Many women fear giving away their clothes. They rationalize keeping the old items around like a no-good boyfriend by asking, “What if it comes back in style? What if I lose weight and can fit into it again? What if I need it for a Halloween costume?”

Gals (and guys), let me put it to you plain and simple: If you haven’t worn it or thought about wearing it in over 8 months- GET RID OF IT. It’s just taking up space.

Another trick—if you have the space—is to toss your unused items into a black plastic bag and store it for two months. If you don’t think about tearing into the bag for that long or can’t even remember what was in there to begin with, then just drop it off at a donation location and use it as a tax write-off. (Yes! You can write off donated clothes!)

Some more suggestions:
1. If you wore it once, decided it didn’t fit right, and haven’t worn it since, then consider taking it to be altered or dyed. If neither of those options work, toss it.
2. If you hate wearing it because the wool is too itchy, the color washes out your face, or it makes you uncomfortable in any other way, toss it. Why put yourself through the misery?
3. If there are non-repairable holes, defects, stains, or other damages, toss it.
4. If you forgot that you even owned a piece, chances are that it’s not a very memorable piece in general. Your clothes should make a statement and not be forgettable.
5. If it reminds you of an ex-significant other, toss it.
6. There is no sense in keeping an item if you’re afraid the style will return and you’ll need the item again. Unless the piece is spectacular or of really superior quality, then it just takes up space. It’s not worth keeping around on the off chance you’ll ever wear it again.
7. Losing weight? If you just had a baby and you are considering another, then keep your maternity clothes. But if you are losing significant amounts of weight, toss the clothes that have become too big for you. It will act as an incentive to keep those pesky pounds off.
8. If you have closets, upon closets of items, try setting small goals for yourself. Determine that you are going to condense 4 closets into one, and you’ll realize quite quickly what you love and what you must have.

Having said this, I would really encourage you to only buy items that are significant building blocks to your wardrobe. It’s not necessary to wear a new or different outfit everyday. Wearing a new article of clothing to match each passing fad only hinders the definition of your personal style.

I also advise that you don’t bother with the over-the-top, flashy items that will likely be out of style in 8 months. Invest in articles that will last a long time and are of a classic taste that you will want to hold onto forever.

Spring Cleaning: The Wardrobe Purge

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zuauSW0qQuY/Sbccq-ZB_4I/AAAAAAAAAHA/O7JcEmVy-gw/s320/IMG_4059.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5311745810134859650" />
It reached nearly 60 degrees last weekend, and as a result, I am feeling the spring cleaning bug. Yes, that is 365 Days of Trash-- the exact title of Sustainable Dave's (or Dave Chameides's) blog, where he chronicles a life where every ounce of refuse, whether created on the road or at home, is kept in his basement to keep it from ending up in a landfill.

Confining all one's self-inflicted garbage in a small space sounds crazy, right? Well, don't write off Dave, just yet. He's an Emmy-award winning cameraman who just cares about the environment. Nothing wrong with that.

And I am sure the experiment was effective, in that, was your garbage to literally surround you on a daily basis, you would likely be more cautious of what was bought.

So, by the end of his year-long project, he tallied the numbers and it came to:
Trash
30.5 Pounds
Cardboard
19 Pounds
Plastic Bags
4 Pounds
E-Waste
12 Pounds
Misc. And, should you desire to turn your basement or living room, for that matter, into a personal landfill, just check out Sustainable Dave's blog, where he additionally offers tips similar to some given here at The Fashion Fast through posts such as: "Think Before You Buy," "Junk Your Junk Mail," "Stop Drinking Bottled Water," and "Coffee Cups Aren't Disposable!"

If I Went Shopping Today...

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 167px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zuauSW0qQuY/SZQzBWU7aBI/AAAAAAAAAGY/WuwLiOxrlC0/s200/serve.asp.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301918759588161554" />
These are the things I would pick up.

American Apparel T-Shirts
V-Necks in gray, black, navy.
These shirts are by far some of the most comfortable and can be worn under a blazer for a cute preppy look or alone as I run errands around Manhattan.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 195px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zuauSW0qQuY/SZQ0P2e0QHI/AAAAAAAAAGw/_CpCcjNVRjQ/s200/_5623244.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301920108249366642" />

Riding Boots
In Brown or Whiskey.
Since I no longer have the opportunity to purchase shoes, my one desire is a handsome pair of flat boots that I can dress up or down. Luckily, I had the same pair, only a few years more worn, laying in my closet and hastily packed those instead. Upon arrival to my first destination, I hopped out the of shower and went to slide on this older pair of jeans, when I realized (or re-remembered) that there was a giant hole in the upper left-hand, inner thigh (a.k.a. the crotch).

I rationalized that it was on the inside and was not too noticeable and gladly went on my way. But by the time a day full of walking ended, the hole had grown slightly bigger and the surrounding denim slightly weaker. I had only packed a skirt or two and three pairs of jeans-- two skinny-leg pairs that could not be worn with anything but boots, and this one-- so my selection for the 15-day trip was rather limited. Right before catching a flight to my second destination, I tossed the dirty jeans in the laundry for a quick whirl, completely forgetting, once again, about the hole. By the time I went to wear them, I could slide my entire fist through it with room to spare. Worst of all, it was starting to become very noticeable from the rear. So much so, that I was tempted to tape a sign to my back that read, "Yes, I know there's a hole down there. Yes, I still chose to wear these jeans despite the fact. And no, you cannot get a closer look."

I seriously contemplated purchasing a new pair-- I was on vacation after all-- but I staved off the temptation, and stuck it out in the pants with the built-in air conditioning. Much like the whole idea of The Fashion Fast, it was a trial of my will. I felt silly, very self-conscious, and felt like a total mess everyday that I was forced to wear those jeans, but I did it, and those worn pants are now like a trophy to me.

Change Has Come

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: undefinedpx; height: undefinedpx;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zuauSW0qQuY/SXcxNeWcSOI/AAAAAAAAAFw/Ba-xIjKJqW8/s400/TB24412-2T.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5293753994552559842" />
Last September/October, I wanted to obtain a piece of history while simultaneously supporting a cause I truly believe in. I searched high and low for a visible, non-fashion item that could commemorate my dedication to getting Barack Obama into the Oval Office, but posters were not transportable and pins seemed to get lost in the shuffle of New York City. I decided to look into creating a tote. Before I could do so, I visited Obama's campaign site and saw the Runway to Change line of products, designed by famous high fashion label-makers, but manufactured in America.

For a few days, I debated on whether or not this would be breaking the fast, and came to the conclusion that because the money spent would go toward the Obama campaign as a contribution, and was not going into the pockets of a large corporation, it was permissible. The Isaac Mizrahi tote pictured here is a keepsake that I will cling to for decades in hopes that the legacy of Obama will last even longer.

Half Has Never Felt So Complete

The fact that I began my fashion fast on July 15, 2008 indicates that, as of yesterday, I have refrained from purchasing clothes, shoes, handbags, and jewelry for SIX MONTHS. One of the biggest changes that I have made to my daily life is to cease all incoming catalogues and emails that might tempt me to break The Fashion Fast's rules. Given the current state of the economy and the countless, seemingly impossible, sales out there; it's best that I pretend like I don't know anything about the existing deals. Therefore, I have called the companies sending merchandise catalogues and asked them to stop. This is not only good for my fashion morale (I am not looking at or craving what I cannot have), but it is also good for the environment, because the discarded catalogues don't end up in the recycling bin.

Secondly, I have unsubscribed to all emails sent from clothing companies with hot tips or insider deals on new sales, discounts, or promotions. Most marketing emails have a mechanism at the bottom of the message that allows the receiver to unsubscribe. Again, not only has this decreased the number of emails infiltrating my inbox (allowing me to feel a little more Zen every time I log in), but I am not tempted to check out Barneys.com or KennethCole.com and hate myself for initiating this fast in the first place.

Happy New Year!

We all know the stigma that is attached to the coming of a new year-- resolutions. So, this year, instead of dreaming about how you would like to shed a few pounds from the waistline, imagine ways to trim your wardrobe. That is, I have reached my five-month mark and I have not broken my vow to refrain from purchasing any fashion item. In fact, besides scoring some super-cute tights from the GAP a few weeks ago (which are, in fact, permissible), I have not brought home any article of clothing nor I have intentionally added to my wardrobe in any way.

As each and everyday passes, I am reminded of how much time and money I used to spend on attire every week, and it's so refreshing to have that burden off my mind. I no longer scan websites everyday for great deals nor do I wander aimlessly around Bloomingdale's for hours on end. I am very pleased with the contents of my closet, and still find new ways to wear outfits and individual pieces. It may be more of a challenge to find something unique to put on in the morning, but my clothes are no longer a barometer of my self-image. I don't rely on my clothes to improve my self-esteem, but I instead work on making sure my confidence is at healthy levels everyday-- before I pull articles of clothing from my dresser.

Beyond not allowing clothes to sway my mood, The Fashion Fast is timely in relation to the current economic hardships affecting the world. Not only are budgets tighter, but also non-profits are finding fewer and fewer donors. Thus, their funds are quickly drying up. So, help me celebrate my five months and contribute to a great cause, either my charity of choice-- Women In Need--or your charity of choice. It's the perfect time of year to give some cash to those that need it most.

Temptation Tuesday: Birthday and Holiday Gifts

Being that my birthday was a last week and the gift-giving/consumerist-filled holiday of Christmas is approaching, I am anxious about possible fashion fast faults. Turning a year older proved to be fashion-fast-friendly, as I didn't receive any clothing beyond some scarves, a hat, gloves, biking shorts (see October's A Moral Dilemma) and a dangerous gift card (i.e. it's for a store I really love).

Yet, as Christmas comes and loved-ones begin asking for my gift ideas list, it is taking every ounce of strength in me to resist telling them that I will gladly accept any skirt in black, any comfy cardigan, and any pair of pumps or boots that one could possibly find in my size. I. Must. Resist.

After all, in this economy where everyone is strapped for extra cash and I am slowly weeding out impulsive consumption from my life, it's a good time to re-recognize why Christians celebrate this beloved holiday. It's hard to sift through the genius marketing ploys and pounds of gingerbread to remember that, should you believe, there is a deeper, more profound reason that we congregate with family and friends each December.

A New Motto

As I was helping my mother clear out her home in preparation for her move across the country, it truly dawned on me just how much stuff we accumulate throughout a lifetime or even over a few years. Do we need it all? No. Do we ever use it all? Definitely not. For the most part, it goes to waste while we are too busy scooping up the new, the better, the faster, and the sleeker stuff.

While I was hauling box upon box from her crammed attic to her even more crowded living room and then (finally) to its resting place-- the super-jam-packed basement, I came to realize that I should value space more than I do stuff. And thus it began, my new motto. I repeat, "I should value space more that I do stuff."

Some might argue that because I live in New York City, where space is a luxury and certainly not the standard, I am forced to limit how much stuff I bring into my life. And it's true. But my new motto becomes even more valid because of the non-existent amount of openness I enjoy. I need to minimize what is cluttering my life and make sure that with which I fill my home, office, handbag, life, schedule, and relationships is practical, but above all, important.

I am Thankful For...

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 222px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zuauSW0qQuY/SStONZ_qGII/AAAAAAAAAFI/Mt9MVJvHD9U/s320/thanksgiving_turkey_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5272393780990449794" />
As the economic recession dissolves into more of a depression and as Thanksgiving quickly approaches, I am thankful for more and more of the seemingly small things.

Fashion-wise, I am thankful for warm clothes, comfortable shoes, a sturdy handbag, tailored pants, a well-fitted bra, and t-shirts. I also am grateful for snuggly sweaters and socks without holes in them. I appreciate tights that don't snag the first time I put them on, high-waisted skirts that hide my sometimes bloated tummy, and baggy, bedtime sweatpants. I realize that sweaters that don't pill, heels that feel like flats, and stretchy jeans are all gems to come by. It's amazing how we take the clothes on our backs for granted.

However, grateful or not, there are things that I can do without, like biking shorts that make me self-conscious, thongs, spandex, tube tops, and stirrup pants.

Shout Out to Shout!

I was recently eating breakfast at my work desk, when some of my meal fell into my lap. Upset by my clumsiness, but calm, I reached for a Shout Wipe to lift the stain off the khaki skirt from which I had just removed the tags that morning. The Shout Wipe did not seem to work, so I went to the ladies' room to rinse the area and deal with the fact that I was going to be walking around the Condé Nast building all day with a big fat blotch on the front of my outfit. But I could handle it, because I knew I could simply go home and have the skirt dry cleaned to remove the remnants of my breakfast.

Or so I thought...

After my impromptu rinsing cycle had dried, I noticed that the Shout Wipe had discolored every inch of the skirt that it had touched, completely ruining the piece of clothing and effectively removing a nearly unworn item from my now limited wardrobe. Angry, I scoured over the Shout Wipe box for any limitations, warnings, or expiration dates, but there were none that matched my situation. I read and reread the section that said that I could use Shout Wipes on "dry clean only" clothing. Still even more mad that I had done everything correctly, and it was the product that malfunctioned, I picked up the phone, called the Shout hotline, took a deep breath, and simply explained what had happened to the Shout Wipe specialist on the other end. After we had gone through the trouble-shooting, and he accepted that it was the product, not me, that did something wrong, he issued me a monetary credit for the loss of my skirt. I was skeptical, but it arrived within the week and I felt somewhat vindicated for my lost item. So, I want to give a shout out to Shout for coming through and standing behind the quality of their products.

Crisis Averted

I returned the shorts, and must say, I am quite proud of the effort. The other day, I was out and about running some errands after work, and I stumbled into a Modell's Sporting Goods store for some socks. While I was there, I found myself wandering into the women's athletic apparel department and checking out the ladies' biking shorts. Then, out of a stupor, I came to the realization that I was paying for the said shorts and walking out the door with them.

Did I lapse? While biking attire is more athletic equipment than fashion item, I am feeling very guilty about this purchase.

If I feel nervous about having them in my possession and removing the tags, then I am thinking that I broke one of the rules-- especially the one where "Permanently expanding my wardrobe is not" permitted." What you think? Should they be returned? Or are they to be considered equipment?

BOO! After the close of the random online poll last week, the charity that will receive donations from The Fashion Fast is Women-In-Need.

Now, this is personally exciting because I have volunteered with WIN for a while, in a few capacities and now find myself on the Associates Committee (basically the junior board) of the charity. It's an organization that promotes health, stability, and growth in women that have, at one point or another, found themselves in the need of government housing and other assistance, but who are on the right track to living their lives independently.

Most of these women have children, most don't have a spouse or partner, many are young, many have had drug problems, most have been physically, sexually, or verbally abused, some have been evicted from their homes, others are just have no where else to go. The one thing that they all have in common though, is that they are women simply trying to make their personal world better for both themselves and their children.

So, if not for me and my endeavors with The Fashion Fast, find a little spare change ($1, $5, $10, whatever) and donate it to this exceptional organization and help a woman get on her feet.

Insert Pump into Mouth

Okay, okay, I know what I said last week-- about how I was feeling so virtuous in not purchasing any clothes. Well, it's starting to hit me: my craving for new fall attire is a driving force to be reckoned with. After all, it feels innate to run to a boutique after work and pick up some new sweaters once the weather outside starts getting cooler. I want new skirts, dresses, and shoes. Shoes, oh, shoes... how nice it will be to buy those again. But I can't do it and it's just now getting so hard.

Last night, in the Shoptropolis of New York City, I had to distract myself and make sure I didn't enter the second floor of a department store where all of the contemporary clothes and shoes lie, waiting for their next victim. Instead, I quickly entered, went about my business, and left. Had I given into the temptation of going up the escalator, I can't be certain that the outcome would have been pretty, or Fashion Fast-worthy, for that matter.

Alas, I am here, still purchaseless.

Since I am currently living vicariously through the purchases of others, comment here or email me with any great buys you've picked up recently. I'm salivating just thinking about it.

Checking In

With America's economic structure faltering as much as it is, I am beginning to realize how much this fast will help me shape my current and future consumption habits. As a result of curtailing my shopping urges, I have also reigned in the frequency of which I shop in general. I wish I had been keeping a statistical log of when I would seek retail therapy over the years, so I could see just how much time, energy, and money that I am not spending. If there was ever a time in my life that I would venture into a fast like this-- I am so glad it's now.

My Current Covet

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zuauSW0qQuY/SNt-LaEESkI/AAAAAAAAAE4/zSKctoJLFrc/s400/MKB0RKD_my.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5249928525070486082" />
I am a firm believer that if you can find the right fit and silhouette for your body, a dress is the most timeless of wardrobe pieces. One could have a full closet of the same dresses for years and not feel out of style. The trick is not only selecting a tailored look, but also picking classic colors and styles.

My Current Covet includes all dresses like the shape to the right: with a sweetheart-shaped neckline, capped sleeves or longer, a fitted waist, and a knee-length or longer hemline. This dress type could easily be rocked by someone 20 or 60, and it would still look fabulous.

Luckily, (unluckily?) for me, dozens of designers have this dress style in their boutiques for all price ranges, so you could spend $150 on a Calvin Klein sheath, or over $1000 on this Michael Kors pictured here. Either way, you will look and feel priceless.

Similar at Heart: Life Less Plastic

Last year, a Chicago marketing coordinator decided to remove the use of plastic from her life. She started small by going to the grocery store and purchasing only products that did not contain plastic; needless to say, she didn't go home with much. Not to mention, she must have carried everything home sans grocery bag.

For some time now, Jeanne Haegele has been blogging about her experiences, frustrations, and successes on Life Less Plastic. Like The Fashion Fast, she is trying to eliminate a former staple from her life and find alternatives to act as a constructive replacement. Over time, like the wasteland of clothes in my closet, unrecycled plastic accumulates in landfills all over the world. And while plastic can be recycled and reused, the plastic containers, bags, and other products that end up in landfills never break down or biodegrade, because of its manmade attributes and chemicals.

Think of all the plastic bags that end up in the garbage because of our shopping habits-- or for that matter-- all the other plastic items related to fashion: buttons, shoes, manmade handbags, price tags, packaging, and hangers. Now imagine ridding your lifestyle of everything made of plastic: sandwich bags, storage containers, garbage bags, combs, toothbrushes, shampoo, razors, water bottles, and everything else with plastic. Cheers to Ms. Haegele, because it takes a smart and strong person to take on a task like hers.

Rechanneling My Shopping Energy

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zuauSW0qQuY/SNBhyPk0sLI/AAAAAAAAAEo/y18V_jvV87E/s320/Jute-Fabric-Shopping-Bag.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246801081688961202" />
Some of The Fashion Fast's lovely loyals had some questions, which I had actually planned to address this week anyway. On the same brain wave, no?

Some recent queries have been:
"The holidays are coming-- you're still allowed to shop for others, right?"
The answer is YES. And thank goodness, because I love shopping for others. It is so satisfactory to spend time conjuring up and searching for the perfect gift. To cease shopping for others for one year is something I know I could never do.

"Do you include home decor and stuff [in your fast], and have you found a replacement for the feeling of new clothing?"
I thought that I was going to spend a lot of time in home goods stores now that I am not picking up clothing for myself every few weeks, but I am shocked to say that this has not been the case. In fact, my desire to shop at all has significantly dropped, whereas there was a time when I enjoyed a good day out among the boutiques. Instead, I am finding that I am using my time in more constructive ways-- going to museum exhibitions, taking photographs, having brunch with friends, and even baking. So far, I haven't missed the physical act of shopping, but again, it's only two months in...

"Do you ever feel frumpy and disenchanted now that you don't have the opportunity to pick up something new every time you feel down about your appearance?"
Ok, ok, this is a question to myself, but the answer is YES. Let's face it: even gals with great self-esteem and self-worth sometimes feel like there bod could use a mini-makeover. Sadly enough, when I was having a bad day or felt like my outward appearance could use a pick-me-up, the first thing I would turn to do is purchase a new outfit. Now, I have to find other alternatives. This past weekend, I got a post-summer facial and a haircut. Both were terrific attempts to spruce up the exterior and feel rejuvenated.

Onto the Third!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have successfully made it into the third month of The Fashion Fast! I bought this necklace as a present to myself when I completed graduate school. In visiting Tiffany & Co. a few years back, I saw this fruity charm designed by Paloma Picasso, and had coveted it ever since. (You know you really like something when you are still thinking about it two years later.)

I didn't end up taking it home that day, simply because I had no occasion to justify doing so. Then, this December rolled around and I finally had a legitimate reason to spend a chunk of change on a self-given gift. This necklace is a favorite because it reminds me of the "sweetness" found in completing something so worthwhile.

Motivation: The Body Project

Body Activism-- I have always loved this concept.

As a Female Gender Studies graduate and enthusiast, body image and how the female body is represented in the media is a topic about which I am quite passionate. So when I heard of this movement called Body Activism a while back, it immediately received my support. It was revived in Time magazine this June. Basically, the Body Project study is a program that helps girls and ladies of an impressionable age to comprehend that a thin figure is NOT the one, sole route to happiness or success and confidence includes accepting one's body for how it is naturally. This institution encourages gals to refuse the images in magazines, on television, and on other media forms, which infer that true acceptance only comes through being thin.

Through writing essays, performances, and actions, such as writing letters to companies that enforce the "thin ideal," the individuals involved strive to debunk the myth that thin is the only way to be viewed as beautiful. So let's follow their example and embrace our figures, ladies. Let's love our bod for all it's gorgeous and unique imperfections. After all, it's our best accessory.

Photograph courtesy of Time.

My Current Covet

Many people have been asking me, "So, how is the Fast going?" And recently, I have been able to reply without hesitation, "It's going really well." I think that the trick has been that I have not been out window shopping (a.k.a. torturing myself) for some time. I have now created a habit, or broken one, and I no longer crave to purchase items for my own gratification.

From time to time however, I will be flipping through a magazine and an advertisement or fashion article will catch my eye and keep my attention. Typically, it's because of a shiny pretty 'lil thing just like the Kenneth Jay Lane gold cocktail ring featured here, which has gotten my seal of approval and is this week's My Current Covet.

Pumping New Life Into a Pair of Shoes

Before: Washed-Out White

               Now: Bankable Black

I bought the above pair of peep-toe pumps to wear on the day I got married. They were the perfect shoe: not too tall and could be worn at all times of the warmer East Coast seasons. After my wedding, the shoes were cast into my closet, not to be worn again for some time. The reason for this was not because I did not love them (I mean, just look at how cute they are!), but because of their color.

I admit, I do not like white dress shoes.

Now, before you vow to never read my blog again, let me explain. White shoes seem so juvenile to me. They remind me more of pastel frilly dresses and Easter Sunday best, than sleek sophistication-- the look I try to emulate. Thus, I needed to show some love to these lovelies and decided to dye them a more New York City-friendly color: BLACK. Now, I can't keep 'em off my feet.

Temptation Tuesday: Back to School Shopping

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zuauSW0qQuY/SL00xnKngqI/AAAAAAAAADo/N9g7mC5q10U/s320/ANIMATED_BACK_TO_SCHOOL.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5241403568260874914" />
I know I am a little delayed in bringing this topic up now, considering that most schools on the East Coast begin a new year this week, but it is something I have endured nonetheless: the lure and temptation of Back to School Shopping.

Even though I myself am not going back to school nor do I have any children that would be enduring the schedule shift from summer loafing to school-time running, I have still been a victim to the countless advertisements and marketing campaigns designed to make me feel as though-- at this transitional time of the year-- I need a whole, brand new wardrobe. I can recall the days when I felt like a poor schmuck that would never succeed in my classes if I didn't have a pair of clean, white shoes to trot into school with on the first day. In some cases, if my mother could not afford a new pair for me that year, I would clean up an older pair with Windex and a washcloth until they were that satisfactory, first-day-of-school white.

Only since adulthood have I realized how those creative and cunning marketers pulled at the heartstrings of my mom who was doing her best to raise five young children and how those same marketers made me feel inferior if I was not donning the latest denim and graphic tee. It was never explained to me that these forces of being "in style" were created so companies could profit. Instead, I went around craving what everyone else could afford and feeling out of place if the new school year did not mean new clothes.

Graphic courtesy of DLife.com.

STATurday: Impulse Buying

"Impulse buying behavior is a sudden, compelling, complex buying behavior in which the rapidity of an impulse buying decision process precludes thoughtful and deliberate consideration of alternative information and choices."

"Apparel impulse buying can be distinguished from reasonable unplanned buying that is based on emotion preference or objective evaluation rather than rational evaluation... Then, come November 2008, he will live off of only these 100 items for one full year.

Think about it: Could you limit your entire expanse of possessions to just 100? Remember, you would have to include things like your toothbrush, razors, suitcases, clothes, shoes, and a lot more in between. Going a year without shopping is going to be a challenge enough for me, as I don't think I could literally minimize my life that much in the near future. After all, I am pretty sure I have over 100 items in just my shirt and blouse wardrobe alone.

Photo courtesy of Apartment Therapy Chicago.

The Fashion Fast: The Purpose-Restraint

Along with conservation and the recession, "restraint" is the last element to my three-fold purpose of The Fashion Fast and is perhaps the most personal motivation behind my vow to go one full year without shopping for clothes and accessories.

When I was growing up, I was amazed by how many clothes my grandmother owned. To this day, I have never seen her repeat an outfit. And, in all honesty, I have never been inside her home, but according to legend, she has closets upon roomfulls of clothes that she has either worn once or never worn at all. There is no fashion bargain that she will pass up. If it is a deal, it ends up in her shopping bag and eventually in her house, which is-- again, according to legend-- one giant clothing rack.

Over time, I have seen the same syndrome taking over my mother's life. Slowly, as the children have left my mother's home and her nest grows emptier and emptier, the closets in all of her rooms get fuller and fuller. Like my grandmother, there is no bargain to which she will not fall victim. Both shop for the sake of shopping; there are no rational reasons behind their consumption habits, except shopping fulfills some mental need that they both share. The two of them are a case study in consumption and the mental effects of retail therapy.

Realizing that such a trait has manifest itself in my own DNA, I have decided that the only way to avoid this shopping neurosis, is to start exercising self-restraint early on in life. One way to accomplish this is to get rid of clothing as I obtain new peices--with which is something I have always been good. But also, instead of purchasing items on a season to season basis or choosing my fashion sense on what is currently most stylish, I am going to seek out pieces that possess trademarks of longevity and meet a quality standard that will last more than a few seasons. In other words, once I begin shopping again, I will select staples that will enhance my own personal style according to my own definition and not by someone else's terms.

At the root of this all, I hope to avoid the poor spending habits of my maternals and try to truly define myself as an individual who can make decisions uninfluenced by marketing and the ebb and flow of fads.

Fabulous Find Friday

A girl needs a goal. And a girl needs a gift when that goal is met.

For the-end-of-my-fast-gift (given to me by my husband who always supports my endeavors but does think that I will be able to complete the fast), I have decided to pick out something decadent, beautiful, but simple.

After searching through dozens of rings at David Yurman, Bulgari, Dior Fine Jewelry, and Cartier to no avail, I reluctantly decided to look at Tiffany & Co. It is not that I don't like this fine jeweler, but as a New Yorker, Tiffany's 57th Street and Fifth Avenue storefront is more of a tourist attraction (a.k.a. zoo) than a decent shopping experience.

Regardless of my prejudices, I did find this 3mm rose gold band for under $600, which if I save my pennies, will make a good gift for that momentous occasion in July 2009.

The Fashion Fast: The Purpose-Recession

It seems that everyone is noticing that the dollars once lining their pockets have disappeared. Many of my friends and associates somehow manage to bring up the timeless conversation piece about having no money, only this time many of them are serious. Without question, Americans are experiencing a recession.

In a new documentary called I.O.U.S.A., with the man that has no reason to be frugal, but is, Warren Buffet, the topics of living within one's means, only spending what you have in cash, avoiding credit charges, and making smart investments abound. To paraphrase what one expert argued on Good Morning America this morning, the Federal Government's lack of discretion in spending, saving, and preparing for the future has set a poor example for American's to follow. It is argued that because the governments across the country have spent freely, regardless of budgets, and have relied heavily on credit, America is now facing a multi-trillion dollar deficit and owes trillions of dollars to other nations.

In a time when the dollar is the equivalent of a deflated basketball-- it has nearly no bounce and nearly no value-- it is now more important than ever to save the few dollars we have. In other words, it is fine to go a season without purchasing a new handbag- take the duster off the one sitting in your closet from two years ago and use that one. It's fine to skip the new backpack for your kid and ask him to use his sack from last school year. It is okay to purchase the generic brands at the supermarket or buy a wardrobe staple from Target instead of Barney's. Minimizing spending and consumption is now the thing to do and I encourage all to step up and cut back.

One Month Down, 11 More to Go

As of August 15, I had officially 11 months to go before my fast is over. While many would not find reason to celebrate in accomplishing only 1/12th of a goal, I have to believe that the first month is perhaps the most difficult. Many say that it takes between 21-28 days to form a habit or to undo a habit. I look at my own shopping rituals and I am not sure at this point if I have willingly resisted consumption on all accounts or if I have simply been too busy to spend time browsing a storefront. Another consideration is money. I can't discern if my shopping urges have also been curtailed by a lack of funds do to summer vacations.

In my opinion, one of the biggest tests will come as the fall season arrives. At that time, despite the fact I bought some fall clothes pre-fast, I know that my cravings for new attire will burn inside me. Fall tends to be my favorite season for clothing. I adore tweeds, denim, and leather boot combinations, as well as think tights paired with a wool skirt. It also does not help that my birthday and Christmas will be around the corner, prompting me to detail a wish list, as I have done in years past. But, this year is different and I will resist.

Choosing a Charity: Poll

Voice your opinion and help choose the charity that will receive donation proceeds from The Fashion Fast! This week, it's my watch.

Once belonging to my Great-Grandma Boyer, this watch was repaired, polished, and given to me by my mother as high school graduation gift. It is a vintage Hamilton watch, circa 1940, with a small 10k white gold face and stretch band, 4 small diamonds, and leaf detail. It is my most significant peice of jewelry (besides my wedding rings) and it reminds me of my past and my Grandmother's incredible style every time it touches my wrist.

We all have pieces we adore, and most of the time there are stories behind them. I cannot wait to soak in the fresh air, campfire smoke, mosquito bites, and morning dew. Giddily, I will also be relishing the ceremonial removal of price tags and will be wearing some new pants.

You see, prior to the fast, I bought some clothes to don while camping. And while it seems backwards to purchase new clothes for the occasion of getting dirty, soiled, and stinky, such an action only emphasizes my former consumption problem.

I am not the only one with such a neurosis, right?

The Fashion Fast: The Purpose-Conservation

Ever think about how much waste is accumulated while one shops? Beyond the price tags and receipts that are inevitably thrown into the trash, are the mass pounds of boxes (shoe, hat, shipping, and otherwise), plastic wrap, plastic bags, shopping bags, tissue paper, and other wasteful products used to enhance our shopping experiences.

During my Last Supper while I was preparing for the fast, I took note of the waste I caused: 4 shipping boxes, 3 shipping bags, 3 shoe boxes each filled with tissue paper, 10 plastic bags, 8 large shopping bags, 3 small shopping bags, 30 sheets of tissue paper, plus the shipping invoices, receipts, labels, and price tags that all come with the shopping scene. And remember, this does not include the paper coupons I might have used or the times I went sans shopping bag and stuffed my goodies into a tote. Multiply these numbers by the shopping habits of the entire world and we have a shopping-shipping problem.

Of course, not many people are crazy enough to cease shopping altogether, but below are some tips for minimizing and conserving while on shopping sprees:

1. Carry your own reusable tote

2. Recycle all boxes, either use them again or follow local guidelines for recycling

3. Skip the tissue paper- it is just a silly formality

4. Reuse all shopping bags and plastic sacks until they are decrepit

5. Shop online or in store and request that catalogs not be sent to your home

Have more ideas? Tell me ways you conserve while shopping.

GENART's Tortuous Night of Temptation

Last week, I attended the GENART Shop NYC event and reported on the evening's festivities for Vanity Fair. Everyone seems to appreciate the concept. (If you don't, I want to hear why!)

When describing the purpose of the fast, I typically start off with the mission, which is to: abstain from clothes and fashion accessory shopping for one year and to donate the proceeds of such a project to charity. This is usually met with a skeptical smile and a raised eyebrow. Either people assume I had some sort of fashion addiction or no one believes that I can accomplish the task!

I usually need to explain the mission further with a three-fold set of bullet points, which I reference below and will write about in more depth over the next few days.

For now, The Fashion Fast is not just an order to cease shopping, it is also about:

1. Conservation

2. Self-constraint

3. Recognizing that we are in an economic recession

Temptation Tuesday: Shopping While on Vacation

Shopping and vacationing have become synonymous to me over the years. Each time I board a plane or embark on a road trip, I know that on the other end, I have days of retail bliss in front of me. Especially when I travel to other countries, I enjoy searching out items that are indicative to the style of the region. I always ensure that there is extra space in my suitcase so I can pack the goodies I have found.

Beginning my trip last weekend, I knew that this time, things would be different. I would have to seek out other activities to stay entertained. Amazingly, but not entirely uncharacteristic, I have managed to find my way to three different malls and shopping centers and it is only a few days into the trip. I even have plans to stop at other famous shopping locales. It's all too tempting...

However, while wandering around during these shopping excursions, a fascinating thing has taken place. I have not been remotely interested in looking at items for my own use. I picked up some gifts for my hostess and poked around a book store, but I did not stop by one rack of clothing or stare down one pair of heels wishing that they would end up in my suitcase. Somehow, the gratification of buying new clothing items has momentarily lost its luster.

I am in shock. In most cases so far, it has been difficult to stay out of the dressing room and keep my wallet closed. Clearly, I have reason to celebrate the fact that there is a degree of progression already taking place.

Humm...Maybe I will go pick up a celebratory handbag for the occasion...just kidding.

My Current Covet

Recently, I stumbled upon an emerging designer by the name of Rachel Nasvik; a Chicago native and Fashion Institute of Technology grad who designers great, quality leather and brass handbags with a vintage vibe and reasonable price tag. Replace the word "clothing" in the quote above with your favorite hobby-related products: Video games, photography equipment, DVDs, make-up, automobile items, whatever the case maybe. I know for a fact that, regardless of the type of product, I am motivated to purchase something new just because it is new. What type of shopper are you?

Some more food for thought:

"Consumer spending over the life span of today's 18- to 25-year-old emerging adults will reach into the $10 trillion range."

Source: Workman, Jane E. and Studak, Cathryn M. Fashion Consumers and Fashion Problem Recognition Style. International Journal of Consumer Studies. pg. 75-84. High Fashion, low fashion, and everything in between, it seems every small boutique and massive department store had sale signs flapping in their storefront windows this weekend, tempting us, calling to us, making us salivate.

Thanks to the recession (that we are clearly in), retailers are making every attempt to lure us doe in for the slaughter, using coupons, by-one-get-one-free gigs, and other incentives. But I am resisting. It's taken a massive amount of will-power, but so far, I have avoided even entering a store for my own purpose. Such a notion goes against every fiber of my being. Prior to beginning this experiment, if I had seen that Bloomingdale's was having a weekend sale, I made it a point to stop by and pick up a bargain-- the same went for Theory, Lord & Taylor, Bergdorf Goodman, whose sale icon is above, and Barney's Coop.

But no longer... With the fervor and vigor one might expect, Reverend Billy and his buoyant choir travel from city to city to preach sermons with this message: consumerism has become the means through which Americans experience and comprehend the world. Further, the lack of personal attention within the shopping experience has dulled our senses and caused us to embrace a chain-store culture where individuality and relationships are not valued.

On the website, users can confess their consumerist sins and begin on the straight and narrow path back to a more simple, less Forever 21/Wal-Mart/Barnes and Nobel-infested life. While it is difficult to convert fully to Reverend Billy's gospel, his theories are a step in the right direction:

Less Consumption, More Conservation.

Can I get an Amen?

The Top Ten Things That Can Update a Wardrobe Without Needing a Shopping Bag

1. A Haircut
How one styles her hair will always make a statement, regardless of what she is wearing from the neck downward. One's hair is very telling and can often outweigh the message given by one's duds.
2. Nail Polish
Since nail polish is more of a cosmetic than anything, I have decided that it's not including in the fast. (Do you disagree? Tell me!) Whether one goes to the salon for mani/pedi or meticulously coats her own, a fun, colorful set of fingers can often make a gal feel like she has a brand new wardrobe for the week.
3. A Tailor
Having a pair of pants that drag in the dirt altered into a pair that sits perfectly mid-heel, can be a matter of looking drabby and looking sharp. A good tailor is the best-kept secret to good fashion.
4. Shoe Polish
Remember those black leather pumps in the back of the closet? The ones that you don't wear because they are scuffed and faded? Drag those babies out, give them a quick polish, and they will be looking like new.
5. Lipstick
Lipstick is in the same boat as nail polish. It's a quick and easy addition to an outfit, and with the right hue, can pull the whole thing together.
6. Ironing
Similar to a good tailor, a smooth ironing job makes a dress, shirt, shirt, and pants look like they have just arrived from your favorite boutique. To remove the lingering wrinkles from the last time it came home from the dry cleaners and was carefully shoved into the only quarter-inch of free space in the closet will be a sharp and crisp update.
7. Fixing the Damaged
Remember those pumps with the broken heel? Or the cardigan with a small hole in the seam? Get those repaired and integrate them back into the closet rotation. And if they can't be fixed? Get rid of them.
8. Borrowing
Borrowing from friends, roommates, sisters, and moms is a great option. Just make sure you return it in better condition than you received it.
9. Being Organized
Better than starting the day off with a brand new frock, is starting the day off with an organized agenda. Even with sporting a fierce new sheath, if you arrive late to a meeting, the lack of punctuality is what gets noticed.
10. Smiling
My mother used to tell me when I would fret about a pimple or the outfit I was donning, "Just smile and no one will notice anything else." This has proven to be solid advice. A sincere smile out-speaks anything else I am wearing or doing.

The Fashion Fast: Rules

In order to ensure that I am staying on track, I have devised a set of rules to follow for the duration of this experiment. These rules apply to all situations. And I will need as many people as possible to keep me in check.

1. No purchases of new outerwear, clothes, shoes, or accessories EXCEPT:
--undergarments/ underpinnings
-- socks
-- stockings/ tights
2. Particular items cannot be requested as gifts nor can I direct anyone to purchase a wardrobe item for me.
3. Gifts and freebies can be accepted and kept.
4. There can be no exchanging of the gift or freebie, unless it is the wrong size or damaged.
5. Hand-me-downs should not be accepted unless they are framed as a gift.
6. All wardrobe items can be repaired, hemmed, dyed, or otherwise altered to provide variety.
7. Special occasions will not warrant a new outfit, unless I am requested as a bridesmaid and need to purchase a dress.
8. Should a wardrobe staple such as a white tank top or t-shirt become stained or damaged, it can be replaced. This only goes for necessities.
9. New clothing may be purchased if a situation arises where I cannot get home to access the things in my closet. This only includes extreme predicaments such as: if my luggage gets lost or delayed while traveling or my shirt gets thrown up on while riding the subway to work-- both of which, I sincerely hope, never occur.
10. Borrowing items from other people is permitted. Permanently expanding my wardrobe is not.

Of course, this list of rules can be added to, but not altered. Did I catch everything? What type of rules did I miss or what laws would you inflict on yourself?

The Last Supper

It's safe to say that before one begins a fast, they have a last supper-- or a meal to prepare for the dearth of what is to come. I took such a notion to heart and devised a list of wardrobe elements to stock up on so I could be prepared for the next year. Cheating? No. Thinking ahead...

Some of the staples that I knew I would need included:

Cardigans that I could wear everyday

A simple black dress (or three)

T-shirts that could be dressed up or dressed down

A few fun, everyday dresses

A suit with a blazer

So, I took to the net and the streets prior to July 15 and purchased what you see in the slideshow from BCBG.com, KennethCole.com, Bluefly.com, Banana Republic, Kensie, Macy's, and Shade Clothing. I made sure to relish every shopping experience, knowing that it will be my last personal delve for a very long time.

How did I do? "Yes!" I thought, as I began to peruse their website for a deal. Shortly thereafter, I realized what I was doing and sheepishly closed the window. "Rats...Oh well, only 364 to go."

Later in the day, I had gotten in the mail a dress I had ordered from Shabby Apple weeks ago. Frustrated, I flopped on my bed and and mulled over what I had just said.

The truth is, I have plenty to wear. I have slacks that have only clothed my legs once, shirts and dresses with purchase tags still intact, skirts that lay unworn because I simply do not feel like ironing them, and of course, beyond-gorgeous shoes that are far too uncomfortable to justify the blistering of my ankles.

My closet is a fashion wasteland.

So what does a girl do when she is shopping in NYC and decidedly cannot find anything worth buying, because she feels the items in her closet are better than those adorning the storefronts?

Answer? She gives up shopping for clothes, shoes, handbags, and jewelry for one full year- despite the looks of unbelief and gaffaws of skepticism that she receives when she explains her plan.

So I ask: What to make of this? Is it normal to have so many fashion items that one cannot possibly decide on anything to wear? Or has shopping for new clothes become, for many people, a form of relaxation or therapy? Or further, have the ideals of consumerism come to make us believe, "If it is not new, it's no good?"

The Fashion Fast: The Goal

To Begin:
My goal for the fashion fast would be to go six months without buying new clothes, new shoes, new accessories, or new handbags.

Where YOU Come In:

As each week passes, I hope that outside parties (you!) recognize my efforts by contributing to a charity fund. At the basis of this exercise are two components-- the fashion and the fast-- that are defined by The American Heritage Dictionary below.

FASH•ION n.

1. The prevailing style or custom, as in dress or behavior.

2. Something, such as a garment, that is in current mode.

FAST n.

1. The act or practice of abstaining from or eating very little food.

2. A period of such abstention or self-denial.

Alone, these two elements and respective definitions seemingly have nothing to do with one another, but starting July 15, 2008, the terms will be strung together for a good cause and a subsequent personal transformation.
